A new paper was released by the Journal of Experimental Biology (JEB) this week describing elastic energy storage in the mantis shrimp, Gonodactylaceus falcatus. The authors include former UC Berkeley undergraduate Travis Zack (now a graduate student in Biophysics at Harvard University), postdoc Dr. Thomas Claverie and Prof. Patek. Featured in the "Inside JEB" section of the journal, this is the first study to characterize the mechanics of elastic energy storage and release in mantis shrimp. Using a materials testing machine, high speed videography and micro-CT scanning, this paper offers new insights into the extreme mechanics of mantis shrimp predatory strikes and the location of elastic mechanisms in this system.
